After an incredible day at Petra we headed even further South into the true desert of Amman. After a few hour bus ride we made it to a small village and immediately got into Jeep-like vehicles. We drove for about five minutes in the back of the cars and then dropped off into a seemingly endless desert. The closest real-life comparison I can make to this beauty is Arizona, yet truly it felt like we were in Mars. For example, the movie The Martian with Matt Damon (coming out this fall) was filmed her for its extra-terrestrial natural setting. The sand was the color of the most beautiful sunset--a salmony orange, and plateaus surrounded us in every direction. The natural beauty was unparalleled to really anything I have ever seen. We spent the day running down sand dunes, and climbing to the highest points of multiple plateaus. We were so lucky to also see ancient Arabic inscriptions from the Nabateans... I was so happy when I could make out the world "Allah" in the hardly readable rock. We drove for miles all over the beautiful desert until we finally called it a day. We then headed to a small colony of tents in the middle of the desert where we would be staying for the night. Local Bedouin treated us to an incredible dinner, and most of the food was cooked under the sand in a pit!! Everything from the lamb to the chai tea was delicious. We then stayed up all night talking and star gazing. There are really no words to explain the beauty of the constellations in the desert. We saw planets clearly without a cloud in the sky, or the moon to affect the clarity. Although we got 2 hours of sleep, we had the most incredible time in Wadi Rum.
